Music for Psychedelic Therapy

Therapeutic Music Curation & Playlist Design by Matt Xavier

Overview

Music plays a central role in my work supporting psychedelic therapy and ceremonial experiences. This work reflects my approach to Therapeutic Music Curation, a method developed through decades of DJ practice and clinical psychedelic work. Through this process, I design emotionally attuned soundscapes that help guide the inner arc of a journey, creating a container where insight, release, and healing can unfold.

Whether I’m supporting a psychedelic session, opening a healing ceremony, or performing at a conscious gathering, my approach remains the same: emotionally attuned, energetically precise, and rooted in decades of musical devotion.

I offer a range of musical services, from therapeutic DJ sets and custom playlist design for psychedelic therapy and ceremonies to peak-time house and techno sets for ecstatic gatherings and elevated afterhours.

Every performance is crafted with intention and deep respect for the power of sound in altered states of consciousness.

My Music Journey

The DJ Within the Therapist: Psychedelic Soundtracking for the Dancefloor of Life

Long before I became a mental health counselor and psychedelic guide, I was a DJ and vinyl collector immersed in the underground music scenes of New York City and Los Angeles. That early relationship with music laid the foundation for what would eventually become my approach to Therapeutic DJing, a methodology that integrates therapeutic music curation, psychedelic soundtracking, and real-time musical attunement during altered-state experiences.

My path began in the early ’90s NYC rave and nightclub culture, organizing underground gatherings across Long Island, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. I was deeply inspired by legends like Frankie Bones, Adam X, and Jimmy Crash. Performing as Matthew Magic, I co-founded Tsunami Productions, the pioneering organization that helped introduce psychedelic trance and acid techno to the North American East Coast.

Over the decades that followed, I held DJ residencies in both New York and Los Angeles, performing at festivals and nightclubs worldwide. As my sound evolved from techno and house to ambient and downtempo, I co-founded the label Railyard Recordings and released music under the names Matt Xavier and grüvhaus. A short but formative chapter in Berlin deepened my love for immersive, hypnotic underground electronic music and further shaped my understanding of sound as a transformational force.

Even during my counseling years, music never disappeared. The dancefloor laid the foundation for everything that followed. Today I carry that experience into both ceremonial and therapeutic settings, merging DJ craft with psychedelic care. Whether on a Funktion-One sound system in a warehouse or guiding someone through ego dissolution in a therapeutic session, I use music to hold space, move energy, and support transformation.

Therapeutic DJing

DJ Mix Protocols for Psychedelic Sessions

👉 Matt Xavier - Therapeutic DJ Mixes

Drawing from my book The Psychedelic DJ, I’ve created a series of ceremonial DJ mixes designed to follow the arc of a therapeutic psilocybin journey. These mixes emerge from thousands of hours spent guiding clients and curating live music for psychedelic sessions.

This approach reflects my broader framework of Therapeutic DJing, where therapeutic music curation and real-time psychedelic soundtracking work together to support the emotional and energetic flow of a journey.

The accompanying timeline illustrates the musical arc used in these protocols, aligning music selection with the emotional and energetic stages of a psilocybin journey.

Each protocol is designed to:

• Align with and support the stages of a psilocybin-assisted journey: onset, ascent, peak, descent, and landing (see accompanying image)

• Evoke emotional resonance, catharsis, and introspection

• Provide immersive soundscapes that range from sublimative and gentle to expansive and transcendent

• Create a safe musical container for navigating expanded states of consciousness

These protocols are best experienced through immersive speakers in an intentional and supported setting. Each mix reflects more than three decades of collecting, testing, and refining music for non-ordinary states and was developed through hundreds of actual guided psilocybin journeys.

  • An Important Note About SPOTIFY

“Why These DJ Mixes Aren’t on Spotify” by Matt Xavier

I know many friends, guides and therapists rely on Spotify and similar services for music. It’s familiar. It’s ridiculously cheap. It’s easy to share. And for those just getting started with music curation, it can feel like the safest option in a vast and often overwhelming landscape of sound. So if that’s where you are right now, I totally understand. You’re already ahead of the curve just by caring about your soundtrack. 👏🎶

But here’s the truth you won’t hear from the streaming platforms, they butcher and starve the very artists who create the music while getting obscenely wealthy in the process. It’s simply uncool.

And now, unofficial playlists made from the protocols in this book are popping up on those streaming platforms and guess what? They’re butchered too. They strip away the DJ transitions, custom edits, emotional arc, and mastering that make these psilocybin protocols function as continuous journeys rather than disjointed playlists. Worse yet, those services don’t even host all the music, which means the versions floating around there are incomplete at best — and misleading at worst.

But most importantly, they pay artists fractions of a fraction a penny per play, while simultaneously using AI-generated tracks to replace humans entirely. Again, not cool.

If music is medicine, then Spotify is fast food. Convenient, yes, but nutritionally empty. And sometimes even harmful, especially to the creators it’s supposed to feed.

These protocols were built with carefully engineered flow, energy modulation, silence placement, harmonic sequencing, and deep emotional pacing captured in live psychedelic sessions. They are meant to be experienced as continuous journeys — not shuffled, not interrupted, not cut to pieces by playlists and algorithms.

So here’s how to experience them properly:

✅ Listen to the protocols on SoundCloud — these are the full journeys, exactly as they were designed.

✅ If a track moves you and you want to use it in sessions, buy it on Bandcamp or directly from the artist website — so the artist actually gets paid fairly and the ecosystem stays alive.

If we’re going to call music a co-therapist, then let’s treat its creators with the same respect we’d give any client in the room. 💖

  • As outlined in Chapter 9: Therapeutic Music Collecting, one of the most powerful ways to deepen your practice is to begin building a personal library of emotionally attuned, high-quality music. You don’t need to be a professional DJ, just someone with the curiosity and care to select music that moves the soul.

The Index of Artists and Remixers in the back of the book is a tribute to the musicians whose work forms the foundation of the protocols and playlists featured throughout The Psychedelic DJ. Thank you all for you unwavering dedication to creating the sounds, frequencies and vibrations we love so much!

Use the links on this page to explore their Bandcamp pages and official websites. Whenever possible, buy the music directly. Many of these artists are independent and rely on listener support to continue creating transformational soundscapes.

Every track is more than just music—it’s a potential co-therapist. Treat your collection as a living library for healing, ceremony, and inner exploration.

Explore Dancefloor Sets

My dancefloor sets grow out of more than three decades of crate-digging, vinyl collecting, and performing in underground music spaces across North America and beyond. While my current work focuses on therapeutic music curation and psychedelic soundtracking, my love for rhythm, groove, and collective release remains a driving force.

These live and studio mixes span psychedelic house, hypnotic techno, lush ambient, and afterhours chill-out—curated with the same care, intention, and emotional precision I bring to healing work. Each set unfolds as a musical journey, designed to move energy, open space, and invite deep connection on the dancefloor.

From late-night burners to sunrise gatherings, these mixes reflect my ongoing love affair with psychedelic sound, sensation, and the dancefloor as a place of shared experience and transformation.
